For The Love of Georgia

IMG_1210

As a long-time fan of Georgia O’Keefe and her art I was drawn to this new book like a moth to a flame.  The fact that this book is a historical novel was especially appealing to me as that is one of my favorite genres (memoirs being the other).

I am mostly familiar with her colorful and beautiful flower studies and I’ve bought many a calendar of those fantastical flowers.  When the year is over I carefully remove the pages with the images and place them in frameless glass frames and hang them everywhere.  On the walls of my office their beauty buoyed me at times in my former high-stress career.  On the walls of my art studio the images provided both rich and calm colors and inspiration.  The pieces currently hanging on the walls of my hallway provide a happy trail on the way to guest rooms.

I’ve never read any of the other books written by Dawn Tripp but I plan to now that I’ve read this one.  Her writing style appeals to my reading taste.  Layers of description but not overly so.  Conveyance of the emotions and feelings of the characters with just the right amount of nuance and leaving room for the reader to use their own interpretation.  The relationships between the characters were beautifully interwoven and their interactions and reactions felt very personal; at times raw and erotic, other times poignant and sentimental.  There were times I laughed out loud at Georgia’s brand of humor.  Other times I felt the sting of tears behind my eyes as she experienced humiliation, frustration, and aimlessness.

My favorite part of this book were the descriptions of Georgia’s feelings as she painted and her descriptions of color and brushstrokes.

The light beat like silver dust on those trees–touching them, shaping them–I turned and walked away–I had to keep it–the intensity of that moment–and then I was home and the brush was in my hands, and I let the feeling hone to a sane, cool edge–no time, no thought, only that clear intent, my fingers taut on the brush, the colors like dark water, that mood passing right through my hand into the lean black forms of those trees.

Here’s another:

I paint the distance .  Not a shape inside it, not a mountain or church or cross.  Just distance.  Line after line of horizon.  Raw sienna, burnt umber, ocher, gold–the colors leave my brush, becoming light-struck dirt.

My goodness I found these descriptions delicious!  I found myself savoring this book and not wanting it to end.  I rationed my reading of it.

The relationships in Georgia’s life are written about in an equally deliciously descriptive way.  The joy, the anger, the hurt, the heat.  “My body glitters as I walk to meet him for lunch.”  What a delightful sentence!  Who hasn’t experienced some form of this during their life?  And if you haven’t well you definitely should!

I could go on with other passages of this book that I have copied into my journal so as not to lose them from my life but I’m sure there is a limit to what is allowed to be shared here.  Suffice to say that I sincerely recommend it.  Thanks for checking in here.  Until next time…Adios.

Growing in Art–Part Two

IMG_0831

Hello again  and Happy Easter!

This piece seems like a fitting way to start.  I was in a state of joy when I created it, in a place of geographic joy, and a with people who bring me joy!

Used lots of found and upcycled items in the construction–scrap wood, muffin papers, sari ribbon, and circuit board remnants.

IMG_0830.jpg

Another piece on canvas panel.  Experiments with dripping Izinks ink, acrylic paints, stencils, ink pens, foam letters on corrugated cardboard colored with Shiva Paint Sticks, also used heated molded plastic, and Pico embellishers.  I am learning more about water soluble vs. non-water soluble as evidenced by smearing of some of my details.

IMG_0834.jpg

I still like to upcycle certain used clothing tags and here is a batch I did at Christmastime.  It is a good way to use up all those little bits and bobs I have leftover from other projects.

IMG_0837

Because who doesn’t love a pic of art supplies??!!

IMG_0877

A sweet and swirly Valentine!

IMG_1034

My latest on a canvas panel.  Mounted on an upcycled backing from a frameless glass frame.  I used modeling paste, a Patti Tolley Parrish stencil, Silks acrylic glaze, glass bead gel, Shiva Paint Stiks, a frame I filled with resin (and a worry doll), heat moldable plastic, a fortune from a fortune cookie, Pico embellishers, and well over a dozen layers.  At one point I was so disgusted with the whole thing that I covered 95 percent of it in black paint and then uncovered parts and continued on.  I really think that you have to hate your project at some point before you really get to something.  Or maybe that’s just moi….

In any case I wish you all a good day and I welcome all comments!

Fresh Start 2015

Transform

Hello hello blog world! Happy 2015! Who is ready for all that the New Year has in store? Well ready or not–here it comes! I’ve made some goals as I do at some point every year–not necessarily only at the new year. Several times over the years I’ve written down my goals and then never revisited the list until much later and I find I’ve realized those goals. I am now a firm believer in setting an intention and letting your subconscious/the Universe/whatever you call your Power, take over and guide the outcome.

It’s not that I don’t do anything and my goals just happen–it’s more like I’m in tune with the opportunities as they present themselves because my subconscious is on the lookout for them. Along the lines of never noticing pregnant women and then when you get pregnant you see pregnant women and babies everywhere.

I’ve set my intentions on a few art-related things this New Year: blogging regularly, creating art regularly, sharing my creations with others rather than stockpiling it, participating in an art abandonment project, and finding a volunteer opportunity which is art-related.

What intentions have you set with regard to your creativity? I would love to hear. Thanks for visiting today–I can’t wait to see you again!

Hello hello!  Isn’t that the most beautiful summer car??!!  Yeah–too bad it isn’t mine, but it does belong to a good friend.  I thought I’d share some of the other things I’ve enjoyed this summer.

In June I went to a garden open house at the home of a local garden guru.  It was absolutely gorgeous with the profusion of colors and vignettes around the property.  Here are some of the shots I took:

Transform It!

Hello hello!  I wanted to share a layout I did this week for the August Swirlygirl Challenge over at Swirlydoos (http://swirlydoos.com/news.php).  This month’s challenge is hosted by Christy at Creating With The Girls (http://creatingwiththegirls.blogspot.com/).  The goal was to take a piece of paper and transform it’s look using whatever you wanted.  Since I am a fan of mixed-media I pulled things from my bag of tricks….

Here is the Before:

Cotswald Manor by Splash of Color

This month’s kit from Swirlydoos is filled with the most beautiful papers it was hard for me to choose one to transform.  They were all gorgeous on their own!  That said–here is what I did…

In The Pink

In The Pink

I recently received some corrugated snowflakes in an RAK from the Funky Junkie Boutique (http://www.thefunkiejunkie.com/) so after gluing those down I continued layering with various and sundry mediums to get to the end result.

Here is a close-up:

I am obsessed with pink right now and can’t seem to get enough of it!  The photo is from a clipart sheet I bought several years ago from ArtChix Studio (http://www.artchixstudio.com/shop/home.php?dir=home).

Here is a list of the supplies I used to create this:

Dylusions spray colorant in White Linen and Funky Fuschia

Inkagold in Rose

Liquid Pearls-Flamingo

Gelatos

Prime and Bo Bunny flowers

Plaid craft paint in County Twill

Versacolor ink pad in Peony

gesso mixed with Dylusions in Funky Fuschia

Heritage 3d Stencil paint

Thanks for visiting today and don’t forget to

Summer Art Potpourri

Purple Pride

Hard to believe that summer is flying by so quickly!  Completely amazing!  I hope all of you are enjoying summer fun, good times, and lots of the beauty of nature.  So much inspiration can be found all around us if we take the time to notice.  I could probably spend a month of Sundays trying to get that purple shading and flow and nature reproduces it flawlessly time after time.

Here are some of the things I’ve been working on since my last update.

A good friend had his 70th birthday party and was his usual serious self–of course I had to memorialize the moment.

IMG_0999 (496x500)

It took all my restraint to keep the layout masculine and relatively unadorned.  I framed it and gave it as a gift to he and his wife.

IMG_0996 (500x460)Restraint be damned when I got to this layout!  I could not get enough flowery adornment on this page!

Switched gears from scrapbooking to some mixed media work on the canvas cover of a mixed-media album.  I used gesso mixed with modeling paste to do my bricks.  The frame and corner pieces are resin covered with black gesso and Inkagold.  I made this project at the Swirlydoos art camp in June.  The class was taught by Design Team Member extraordinaire Rachel Moses.  I love my framed worry doll!

My goal this summer has been to use up items in my stash because it seems to reproduce exponentially when I’m not looking.  This layout I used some strips of fabric to make my ties along the top.  I used some gelli plate printed doilies, ribbon, and stenciled glass bead gel.

IMG_0972 (483x500)The next layout is one featuring a picture of my crazy little fox terrier mix–Sophie.  Do not be deceived by this precious photo of her slumbering comfortably on my husband’s pillow.

DSCN0707 (490x500)Lots of distressing and flowers and texture but the main thing about this layout is that I used a piece of paper that I had been “hoarding” for about four years.  Yay me!

I have more projects to show next time.  See you soon and thanks for visiting today!

Art Definitions

Merriam-Webster.com defines art as:  A visual object or experience consciously created through an expression of skill or imagination.  That is a pretty all-encompassing definition that suits me perfectly.  I believe Art is where YOU see it.

I see Art in scrapbooking:

Doorway in Turkey 2010

I see Art in cooking and pretty food:

A simple lunch at the office

I see Art in architecture:

I see Art in sculpture

I especially see Art in nature and I am inspired by it every day.

Learning From My Art Journal

Imagine Yourself Beautiful

It’s been several days since I began my Art Journal Experience and I look forward to it every time.  I thought I’d share some of the things I’ve learned so far.

–You can use up a lot of bits and bobs that you’ve been saving.  The entry above I finally used the rose in the vase illustration which I had cut out of an old children’s book and had in my stash for at least 5 years.

–Don’t put a brad through the previous page without figuring out how you are going to camoflauge the back of it on the next page.  Lesson learned.  My least favorite part of this page is the metal tape embellishment I put over the back of the brad (upper left corner).

–Put masking tape over the center seam of the book before you cover it in gesso so your paints, inks, etc., don’t leak down into the book spine and bleed over into other pages.

–Put scrap paper under each page you are working on to keep any overflow mediums from going over the edges onto already done pages or the next page.  Some people may not be as picky about this as I have discovered myself to be!

My Secret Garden 051413 (500x348)

This page is pretty much strictly paint and a bit of Lindy’s Stamp Gang mist.  I started out wanting to use up some of the scads of leftover alphabet stickers in my stash.  You know how when you buy alphabet stickers and use up all the “good” ones and then you’re left with lots of consonants?  I’ve created several items in the past using these poor “old maid” letters.  If you look closely you’ll see the stickers are the base of the stems, leaves, and flowers on this page.

Shine On 051513

I started out this page wanting to use some InkaGold color pastes.  I started with those vibrant Dylusions Spray Inks and then progressed to Luminarte Silks paints, some metallic 3d paints and finally added some painted masking tape I made months ago.  On this page I learned that I love all these rich and shiny colors together!!

Other things I’ve learned:

–Roll with whatever you’re doing–there are no rules in your own art journal.  Use whatever colors you want and put things anywhere you want.  You are the Boss With The Hot Sauce…or the metallic paint as the case may be.

–Be patient when it comes to waiting for things to dry.  I am completely impatient with this and my heat gun is my best friend.  There are some mediums that dry differently if you force dry them and it kills me to have to let them air dry naturally.  I will keep working on this.

The most important thing as always is….
